The European Union (EU) is working to reduce the effects of climate change and establish a common energy policy. By 2020 renewable energy should account for 20% of the EU's final energy consumption (10.3% in 2008). To meet this common target, each Member State needs to increase its production and use of renewable energy in electricity, heating, cooling and transport.

In order to explore the potential of use of renewable energy resources (RER) in small settlements at the border area of Latvia and Lithuania, where mostly non-renewable energy resources are used, five project partners of the project “Renewable energy” came together to encourage local inhabitants to think green and increase the efficiency of the energy sources used in heating and electricity. Latvia–Lithuania Programme during past Saturday on 12 May has participated in celebration of Europe Day in Vermana park (Riga) at European Garden Festival. It was already fourth year when Latvia-Lithuania Programme and projects where presented during the event.
This year 2012 is pronounce the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations by the European Union and main activities within the festival where devoted to this topic.

The new website of the EUSBSR was launched today by Colin Wolfe, Head of Unit of DG Regio, who gave the opening speech for the 3rd Working Meeting of the EUSBSR and officially launched the recently created website for the Strategy.
